Our quality of life here in Silicon Valley is deeply affected by the quality of our natural environment. I have been active for more than 20 years in working to protect the environment. I believe that protecting the environment is among the most important issues facing our society, and deserves focused attention from local government. I authored the first environmental policy at Foothill-DeAnza, and am proud of the work that has been done there to encourage conservation, avoid waste, and prevent pollution. As a City Council Member, I will work hard to assure that environmental protection is a key consideration in all of our municipal work.

The City of Cupertino plays a key role in a number of environmental issues, including land use, hillside protection and parks. Pressure to develop the hillsides continues, and I will be vigilant in preventing an expansion of the urban area. We cannot allow suburban sprawl to take over what remains of our open space resources.

There are a number of key issues on my environmental agenda for the City:

  • Protection of the hillsides from sprawl beyond the urban growth boundaries
  • Accommodating, solely within existing urban areas, the pressure for housing by our growing population
  • Improving the walkability and bicycle-friendliness of our Cupertino streets
  • Implementation of a strong environmental protection policy to govern all City operations

As a member of the City Council, I will be a strong voice for a clean, healthy, sustainable environment. I am proud to have earned the endorsement of the Sierra Club and the Santa Clara County League of Conservation Voters.
