Crime prevention and public safety are key functions of City government. While we are blessed with a relatively safe community, we need to be sure that law enforcement and crime prevention receives the proper attention of policy makers. I will also work with the Central Fire District, which serves Cupertino, to be sure Cupertino is doing everything possible to protect our community. The City needs to work collaboratively with the Fire District on issues such as hillside hazard reduction, emergency preparedness, and coordination of agencies.

As a member of the City Council, I will work with the Sheriffs department to place resources into the fight against violent crime. We cannot let attention be diverted from this crucial task. I believe that we must have the resources to incarcerate violent offenders for their full sentences. The community as a whole may be better served by placing non-violent first time offenders into alternative programs, since jails are extremely expensive to operate. The County has been an innovator in this area, and I will work with the Sheriff, District Attorney and Judiciary to develop the best system to protect against crime and improve the administration of civil and criminal justice.

There is a small Sheriff's substation in City Hall; most of our coverage originates from the substation in Saratoga. We may have an opportunity to open a bigger substation here in Cupertino - aiding us in our desire for 24/7 coverage.

I believe that our community owes a debt of gratitude to our public safety professionals, particularly the Deputy Sheriffs, Probation officers, and Correctional Officers who do such necessary work for all of us. As a Councilmember, I will work to see that they get the support and training they need.

I am proud to have had the endorsement of both the Santa Clara County Deputy Sheriff's Association and Santa Clara County Firefighters in my campaign for City Council.
